Although I was far too busy basking in a sea of euphoria to acknowledge the mighty Ian Brown mutter his cryptic announcement, that doesn't make it sting any less. Before we commence our mourning over the divorce of one of the greatest bands to ever emerge from the UK, I would like to take the time to thank The Stone Roses for their service to britpop. Where would this genre be without their seminal self titled album that hit the shelves in '89? We're talking about an album that influenced the sounds of Oasis, The Charlatans, Primal Scream and even Blur.
Despite all of this, what impressed me most about seeing The Stone Roses was that Ian Brown has the power to saunter on stage whilst shaking a tambourine for two hours and the crowd still go wild regardless of what his voice sounds like - to be honest, you can't really hear his voice over the roaring fans anyway.
The concept of the Roses being over for good brings with it an air of heartache, however, knowing I was in attendance to what was potentially their last gig softens the blow a little bit. Their legacy will always be imprinted in the spirit of young people and the hearts of the old.
